Dear Urbanistas & Urbanistos,

It's been said that without change/evolution we die. After much deliberation I have decided to close one chapter in order to begin a new one. Therefore, this will be my LAST post as "The Urban Heiress." I'd like to thank all of you who have been entertained by my commentary since I launched the blog in 2009. It's like my baby (a sometimes neglected & malnourished baby but still mine nonetheless). LOL! However, as I'm sure you can all relate we go through seasons in life and I'm ready for something fresh & exciting, a clean slate... With that being said, here's the good news!

"Oh Yes!" vs. "Oh No!" - 1st Edition

So we all have those moments when we see something along our daily journey that either makes us say "oh yes" or very emphatically "oh no." I'm convinced (as we all are) that I encounter these moments more often than the average person. In an effort to start sharing my happy,happy-joy,joy & WTF experiences with you, this is the first of many posts which highlights candid snapshots of my personal eye-catching occurrences.

So should I start with the good or the bad? We always tend to enjoy the bad a lil bit more so I'll start there...

There's so much wrong with this picture I don't even know where to start. Some parts of the anatomy just shouldn't be consumed for ANY reason. The fact that people are spending their hard earned $$$ on this "food" is even more disturbing. This isn't even worthy of an "Oh No," how about "Just NO!"

Now, for a bright moment...the Italian Fiat is BACK in the US for the first time since 1984! I've seen several Fiat 500s cruising around LA & every time I see one I say to myself "Oh YES!"

For those of you outside of the L.A. area you're probably wonderin' what the heck I'm talking about. Well, the city of Los Angeles has decided to shut down a 10-mile stretch of the 405 freeway this weekend. Any1 familiar w/ Los Angeles knows about the torturous traffic-ridden freeway which is a main & vital artery to navigating this expansive city. Angelenos are in sheer panic over this ordeal. On a good day you can spend hours in bumper to bumper traffic just to drive the exact 10 miles that will be shut down so one can only imagine how awful this is going to be. And the city's best advice...(drum roll) STAY HOME! HA!!!! LOL! Like really? That's the best the gov't can offer! And of course this weekend I begin a project in the OC which is located where...(surprise) off the 405.

In the wake of disaster, one of my fave airlines JetBlue offered a glimmer of cheer by offering $4 YES that's $4 flights from Burbank to Long Beach. I would have jumped on it immediately, but of course I was 15 minutes too late. The tix sold out in hours! This is gonna be VERY interesting.

Greetings Urbanites!

I hope every1 enjoyed a fantastic July 4th celebration, if you're here in the U.S. For those abroad, I hope you had a very Happy Monday.

I'm finishing my holiday celebration in America's playground, Las Vegas. I'm proud to say that this entire trip only cost me $200! How did I manage that you say? Keep reading for my personally tested travel tips:

1. Frequent Flyer Miles = Spontaneous Jetsetting
Using my miles, I was able to book a last minute flight for only a $2.50 processing charge. I advise each of you to sign up for a frequent flyer rewards account for EVERY and I mean EVERY airline you ever fly. If you don't you're simply cheating yourself b/c the airline is gettin' your $$$ either way. It's not too late to repent for past sins (metaphor seems appropriate given my current locale). Most airlines will allow you to apply past trips up to the past year to redeem credits towards your account.

2. Discount travel sites
I've been luxuriating at one of the most popular 4-star resorts on the Las Vegas Strip for a whopping $94/night. How do you ask? HOTWIRE! I can't sing enough praises about this site. I've booked hotels all over the country & haven't had one bad experience. Plus, they've even issued me "Hot Dollars" for future use on a few occasions when my travel plans changed at the last minute. Yes, it's true that you don't find out the hotel until post-purchase, but that's actually part of the fun for me. The trick is searching by a zip code in your desired location, checking the appropriate star-rating (3+ stars) and voila...you're living the glamorous life for a fraction of the cost.

But I must say, the highlight of this trip has been my helicopter tour of the Hoover Dam & the Grand Canyon. Def a must do the next time you're in these parts. Get away from the debauchery of the Strip & enjoy God's majesty. Here are a few aerial pics I'd like to share w/ you from the experience...

Conspicuous Consumption: The World's First $1 Billion Home

Some say, "if you've got it, flaunt it" or more recently, "it ain't trickin' if you've got it." But others are outraged that India's richest man has built the world's most expensive home just miles away from the extremely poverty-stricken areas of Mumbai.

Mukesh Ambani, his wife & their 3 children will soon move into this 37,000 sq foot home which includes a 27-story monolithic structure complete with three helipads, a health club, dance studio, ballroom, 50-seat movie theater and underground parking lot for 160 cars.

This article identifies 6 items that we've all purchased at one time or another. When you really think about the amount of money we waste on these inflated goods it's downright insane. But not to fear! The Urban Heiress is here with budget-friendly alternatives:

1. Movie theater concessions
Urban Heiress solution - Call it lowbrow if you want, but I see nothing wrong with stocking my tote/handbag with goodies from Trader Joes or Whole Foods or a baggie of light popcorn from home before hitting up the theater. And the best part is that my snacks are always healthier than the fatty/sugary options at the movies.

2. Greeting Cards
Urban Heiress solution - My mom turned me onto purchasing greeting cards at discount stores like Family Dollar, The Dollar Store & the $1 Store. You can find cards as cheap as 50 cents!

3. College textbooks
Urban Heiress solution - During my college years I learned VERY quickly to shop for "used" books since some books barely even get cracked open throughout the semester by many previous users. Other options are to shop online for used/new textbooks and don't forget to check student bulletin boards for great deals. Or really be scrappy and establish your own book swap between your classmates. Identify folks in your major since you're all taking the same required courses.

4. Bottled Water
Urban Heiress solution - Okay, I confess that I'm a bottled water snob. I have a fave brand that I don't deviate from, but one thing I've learned is to buy it in bulk and on sale! Stock up since you'll never have enough H2O.

5. Printer Ink
Urban Heiress solution - Go green as OFTEN as possible. With Droids, BlackBerrys, iPhones, etc. we can skip hitting the print button now. I use my CrackBerry for boarding passes, coupons & any other attachments to avoid burning up printer ink.

6. Brand-Name Fashions
Urban Heiress solution - Now this is MY area of expertise. Pick one: Designer resale stores, consignment boutiques, fashion discount retailers (Marshalls, Loehmann's, Nordstrom Rack), yard/garage sales, online shopping sites (RueLaLa, RenttheRunway, Gilt, HauteLook). You should NEVER pay full retail price....EVER!

So this past weekend I hit the Big Apple for my BFF's b'day party & following a fab brunch at Sarabeth's (Central Park South location - my fave!) we stopped by the mecca of all stores, Bergdorf Goodman. I was prepared to do my usual "window shopping," but to my pleasant surprise there was a bananas sale going on! To give you an idea, I scored a pair of J Brand skinny jeans for $49 - regular price $228! I know, I know...I still feel like I did something illegal. There were racks of haute pieces/shoes on sale so if you're in NYC run there before it's ALL gone! It only took me a WEEK but I finally read this year's InStyle Sept. issue from cover to cover. It's honestly the biggest issue I've ever seen! It's full of interesting tidbits. One thing that caught my eye was a blurb about "mood" nail polish. Mood rings are so 1990!

Now your nail lacquer can sum up your feelings. I for one can't wait to try this! Instyle pubbed this brand but there are several out there, including a line at Claire's. Time to let your fingertips do some of the talking!

Equal Opportunity Marriage: Are you down with the Swirl?

No, I'm not talking about the overturning of Prop 8 (but I did do a victory dance last night). Not sure where I was when this was first reported in June, but I was very surprised (yet not) to learn that interracial marriage in the U.S. is at an all-time high! 14.6% of all new marriages in the U.S. in 2008 were between people of a different race or ethnicity. I find this very interesting in a country where in some parts I'm still referred to as "colored." Now anyone who knows me knows that I've ALWAYS been an equal opportunity dater. And I don't buy into the hype that there's a disproportionate amount of good eligible black men in the world. I know too many good ones. Now I will say that I've noticed a large increase in the number of brothas who are opting to date outside of the race. Love is blind, but 22% of black men who wed in '08 married outside their race. That's more than 1/5 versus the 9% of black women did the same. What's really good? Is there a reason for the "mass exodus" or is it simply that color lines are finally being erased?

Shopping Diets: Wear 6 Items or Less for a month?

So there's a new global movement to encourage people to go on "shopping diets" to "tame the urge to buy."Tamsin Davies of London (pictured above) and her friend Heidi Hackemer, a Manhattan advertising executive, wore just six items of clothing for a month.

Ok, now I'm all for "trimming the fat" but not sure if I could ever do this. I don't know, maybe b/c I think it's just downright triflin. Now you know these folks weren't washing the six items after every wear. I ain't buying that. There's 7 days in a week so can you at least make the restriction enough items to not have to repeat pieces in the same week? I'm just saying... So almost a YEAR ago I told yall about these limited edition Jimmy Choo/Hunter Rain boots. I was a lil' obsessed. I went as far as having my personal shopper call me with weekly updates until he finally got his hands on a pair of size 6s in July. I'll admit I having urban addiction relapses every now and again. But when he called to say he had them I found the strength to say "NO" (although I went back & forth with the decision for 3 days!!). Anyway, I was fine until I recently spotted an urbanista on Michigan Ave. Here I was minding my own biz when she sauntered past me in MY boots! I just had to whip out my CrackBerry and get pics of my boots in action.

Now I can't stop thinking about them. And the kicker? The boots are now retailing for $425 when just last year they were $395. What's that...we're still in a recession? That's what I thought too. But you can find some legit deals on eBay. I'm torn. What to do?

Whether or not this is your cup of tea, it's important to stay physically fit for your overall health. If you're like me, hitting the gym is a BIG part of this. However, gym memberships can be quite pricey. Here are a few tips on how you can save a few $$$ so you can buy some cute workout gear:

*The Buddy system - Personal training gives you awesome results but can be super expensive. To save look for a fitness trainer who will let you & your BFF/work-out partner split training sessions, which means you also split the cost.

*Gym hoppin' - Give or take a few classes/equipment all gyms are basically the same. I'm going to preach swingin' until somebody finally gets it. Take advantage of free promotional offers of gyms in your area. If Gym A offers two-weeks free then hit-it-and-quit-it 14 days later. Then mosey over to Gym B and see if you can negotiate a free promo there (they would love the opp to steal you from Gym A). Then you can take time decide which gym is best for you.

*Run from a Commitment - Don't get locked into a drawn out contract. Negotiate with your gym of choice to get the best month-to-month rate (you can use your trial membership at a competing gym as leverage).

*Parks & Recreation - When was the last time you went by your local park's community center? Many offer fitness classes like yoga, dance, pilates for less than $10 or even FREE!

*Gold-diggin' - Step #9 of the 12-Step Urban Addiction Recovery Program is all about digging for gold, but not in the way you're prob thinking. This doesn't require finding an elderly sugardaddy on life support. It simply means to actively look for perks. Many gyms, yoga studios, etc. offer specials. For ex. my location yoga studio offers a $5 class on Thursdays versus $20 a pop any other class. So can you guess which class I attend? I'm sure you're wondering what I do the other 6 days. I have a steady rotation. On Mondays ANOTHER yoga studio offers a lunchtime special rate so on Mondays that's where I get my yogi fix. Swingin' at its best, but I spread the love around equally ;-)

*Buy in Bulk - It's the same Costco/Sam's Club strategy. When it comes to classes you can save $$$ by purchasing packages (weekly, monthly, yearly), but be very honest with yourself beforehand. There's no point in buying a one-month pass if you're only go to attend two classes.

1. Cars - If you're shopping for a new whip, the best time to buy is at the end of the month. Car dealers are anxious to meet their sales quotas so you'll have the best bargaining power on the 30th/31st/28th.

2. Major appliances (air conditioners, refridgerators, etc.) - New models make their debut in early fall, which means you can get the previous year's model for dirt cheap in Sept. & Oct. This is pretty obvious, but for seasonal items (like grills) your best bet is to purchase these items in the off season. This also applies for sporting/hobby equipment like bicycles.

Swingin' is Step #7 of my 12-Step Urban Addiction Recovery Plan, which simply means throwing "brand loyalty" out of the window. We tend to be habitual creatures & this often gets us caught into a pattern of doing the same things & patronizing the same businesses for years (even if we're dissatisfied) b/c we're so afraid of change or shaking things up. The thought of trying a new restaurant, hair salon or even laundry detergent is unimaginable b/c we're so "loyal" to a brand/establishment that may be robbing us blind and possibly not even giving us the level of quality of service/goods we could get elsewhere for LESS MONEY! This is why I've adopted a mindset of "brand swingin." I'm all about getting the best bang for my buck. Sure I love my hair stylist, aesthetician, tailor, etc but they all know that I'm always looking for the best deal. As a result they work harder to make sure that I receive the best service b/c they don't want to lose my business. I'm not suggesting that you go to your next hair appt demanding that you leave looking like Beyonce or you're finding a new stylist! All I'm saying is don't ignore the freebie being offered at the salon next door if it's going to save you some cash. Then you can always go back to your regular stylist...hence the term "swingin." It's all biz...never personal :-)
